A man in Kimmirut was arrested Saturday evening after RCMP received a report that a man had shot at an occupied vehicle.
The suspect was located at a residence, police said Wednesday in a news release, and officers successfully negotiated his surrender soon after.
One person was injured in an alleged strangling assault prior to the shooting. The victim and accused were known to each other, said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie.
The victim was also in the vehicle that was shot at, Henrie said, but nobody was injured in the gunfire. Henrie said he did not know if anyone else was in the vehicle.
Brandon Atsiaq, 23, is charged with attempted murder, possession of a weapon for committing an offence, assault by strangulation, assault, reckless use of a firearm and careless storage of a firearm.
Atsiaq allegedly used a rifle to shoot at the vehicle, Henrie said.
He was remanded into custody and his next court appearance is Wednesday afternoon in Iqaluit.
The investigation is ongoing.
Anyone who may have witnessed or recorded video of the incident is asked to contact Kimmirut RCMP detachment.

I remain curious as to what the police policy is for publicly naming people who have been charged with crimes. While the individual in this story was named, most of the time I find that people charged are not named. I wonder what the considerations are in deciding whether or not to publicly name a person charged in a press release?
The amount of dysfunction and violence in Nunavut communities is simply off the scale.
Stay out of Nunavut we don’t want you guys here annoying
Used to be a nice little town until alcohol was legally available
Kimmirut, considering its relatively low population, has had more than its fair share of violent incidents over the last 3 decades. Sad…
Not sure if you know the dark history with the old school teacher Edward Horne? Please read up on it and you’ll gain a better understanding of the ripple effect it has done in Kimmirut, Cape Dorset, Sannikiluaq the most. He also taught in Apex and a couple more communities but the top three he done the most damage. It is very sad / heartbreaking and we see it today as it was not that long ago.
