A man who assaulted a police officer with a weapon in Naujaat, causing a career-ending injury, is a “menace” who nobody is safe from, a judge said after the man pleaded guilty to six charges in court Thursday.
Benjamin Malliki, 33, was sentenced to 18 months in jail after pleading guilty to six of the 19 offences he was charged with, stemming from a series of crimes he committed between September 2023 and May 2024.
“Mr. Malliki, you are a menace,” Justice Colleen Suche said as she handed down her sentence in a Naujaat courtroom.
“You are out of control. This whole community — from relatives, cousins, your father, the RCMP — nobody is safe from you.”
Malliki pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, assault with a weapon, breach of probation, assault, attempting to disarm a police officer and failure to comply with a condition of release order.
Crown lawyer Abel Le Bouthillier said it was “not acceptable to resist a police officer, and even less so to attack a police officer in the course of their duty.
“Considering the severity of the injury, 18 months [in jail] would be more than appropriate.”
The judge noted Malliki’s problems with alcohol.
“His entire record relates to his serious substance abuse” which he has had for the majority of his life, Suche said.
“That you said you need help is an important first step. I can see from your history that you have needed help for a long time, and time is running out for you.”
Prior to sentencing, the judge asked if Malliki had anything to say.
“I am sorry for what happened,” he said. “I don’t really remember everything, but my lawyer told me just because I don’t remember, doesn’t mean I’m not guilty.”
Addressing his own alcohol problems, Malliki added: “I need help.”
Suche sentenced him to 18 months for the assault on a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer.
For the assault with a weapon and breach of probation convictions, he was sentenced to two months to be served concurrently with the 18-month sentence. He was also sentenced to 40 days for assault, to be served concurrently.
The 110 days Malliki spent in pre-trial custody were applied to those sentences.
Only 18 months for assaulting a cop, trying to take their weapon, and ending their career from an injury?? Insane. He ruined someone’s life and only gets 18 months. Lock him away for 5 years at least. What is this country becoming where this “menace” that “no one is safe from” will be locked up for not even two years?
100%!!
And people complained when Karima Manji only got 3 years.
Who’s the real danger?
Dude ended the cops career. Shoulda been sentenced longer. Aggravated assault
This is an extremely light jail sentence.
This type of repeated violent behavior in Northern Canadas communities are not acceptable. The jail term should have been 4 – 5 years in a correctional facility in the south.
Where’s the mental health workers or social workers that they say they do there work, for sure there might be some documents from them. When there is a serious things happen, they always be the first one to be on the job. And if they are certified how come they can’t be investigate their job too, they have regulations too what not to do in the work.
A very light sentence, he will harm someone again… or worse
Gotta love that the best photo on file of the Naujaat sign is broken. Can’t someone fix it?
