A man and a teenager are facing weapons charges following a May 16 traffic stop in Iqaluit.

The stop took place on Ataani Lane in the Lower Iqaluit area, Iqaluit RCMP said in a news release.

Police had “reasonable grounds” to pull over the driver for possession of property obtained by crime, the release said.

Upon arrest, police found cocaine, cash and a loaded prohibited firearm in the vehicle, according to the release.

Abdullah Ahman, 35, faces seven charges: unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm in a motor vehicle, unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, careless transportation of a loaded prohibited firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of weapon obtained by commission of offence, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court May 26.

A 16-year-old also faces eight Criminal Code charges: unauthorized possession of a prohibited firearm, careless transportation of a loaded prohibited firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of weapon obtained by commission of offence, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition and possession of weapon for dangerous purpose.

The youth, who is a “non-Nunavut resident,” also faces a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking, under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

The teen was released from custody and is set to appear in court June 26.
