The fall sitting of Nunavut’s legislative Assembly wrapped up Thursday, with MLAs passing into law seven bills they introduced, leaving four to be dealt with later.

“Thank you, each and every one of you, for working hard for the two weeks of what we did,” said Speaker David Joanasie, the MLA for South Baffin, as he closed the session at the end of the day.

MLAs looked at 11 bills over the two weeks that that they sat, beginning on Oct. 22, including legislation to increase the student loan limit, changes to the membership of the board of inquiry that governs medical professionals, and an approval for capital expenditures.

Among the bills that were passed were:

  • Bill 15: an act to amend the Student Financial Assistant Act to double the limit of loans made to a person who is eligible to receive other loans to $300,000.
  • Bill 14: an amendment to the Medical Profession Act to update the membership composition of the Board of Inquiry, set out term limits for members of the Board of Inquiry, establish hearing panels, and modernize the law’s language.
  • Bill 10: Appropriation (Capital) Act, a bill that authorizes capital expenditures for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2028.

The policymakers are scheduled to return to the Legislative Assembly in the new year on Feb. 27.
