The secretary general NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Jens Stoltenberg, will be coming to Cambridge Bay on Aug. 25, the Prime Minister’s Office announced Friday. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will join Stoltenberg on his trip.
During their visit to the hamlet, Stoltenberg and Trudeau will visit its North Warning System site and the Canadian High Arctic Research Station.
They will also meet with Inuit leaders and locals in the community, as well as Canadian Armed Forces members operating in Cambridge Bay for Operation NANOOK.
Stoltenberg will arrive as part of a larger Canadian trip that also includes visits to Edmonton and Cold Lake, Alta. He will be in the country from Aug. 24 to 26.
The secretary general is in the country to talk about shared priorities between Canada and NATO, such as climate change’s impact on defence and security, particularly in the Arctic. He will also be discussing the threats, like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
July 2019 was the last time the secretary general visited Canada.
