‘Go North’ explores tradition and resilience in Indigenous communities
Musician Terry Uyarak is set to take viewers across Canada on a walrus hunt.
His life in Igloolik is on display in the first episode of a new six-part APTN docu-series, Go North. Each 60-minute episode explores a different aspect of living north of 60 and highlights Indigenous travel and resilience.
Uyarak takes the show’s crew on a hunt to demonstrate the process of catching, killing and butchering the animal.
“We are known to be walrus people, so why not do something with walrus,” Uyarak said in an interview, describing how he landed on the decision to focus on the hunt.
“I just want to educate the people that what we are living here is not anything new and we’ve been doing this practice for … we don’t even know how long.”
Uyarak’s walrus hunt is just one example examined in Go North of how Indigenous communities adapt to change while maintaining and protecting traditions. Other episodes focus on how people in the North still use traditional methods of travel like dogsled and kayaking.
“I really want to educate the world that we’re welcoming, wonderful people here,” he said.
The show is narrated by Shina Nova, an Inuk social media personality, singer and activist.
Go North premiéres Sept. 3 on APTN.
