A former Nunavut Arctic College administrator has been appointed as the new executive director of Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium.

Daniel Martin, who starts his new role in October, has been working in Iqaluit for the past 15 years, the consortium said in announcing the appointment Tuesday. Previously, he managed the Nunavut Teacher Education Program at Nunavut Arctic College and also held roles within the Environmental Technology Program there.

“Daniel Martin has spent much of his career supporting Nunavummiut in developing the skills and knowledge to succeed,” said Julai Alikatuktuk, chairperson of the consortium’s board, in the announcement.

The Nunavut Fisheries and Marine Training Consortium is a not-for-profit organization that provides training to Nunavut Inuit interested in pursing a career in the Nunavut fishing industry.

“[Martin’s] experience in delivering and managing northern training programs, and his clear dedication to empowering Inuit through education and opportunity, aligns well with [the consortium’s] mission,” said Alikatuktuk.

As executive director, Martin succeeds Elizabeth Cayen, who retired this year.

I know it’s the end of summer and things are slow, but why is this news?

It’s fast and easy copy that generates clicks and engagement…as we’ve both just demonstrated.

Because investigative stories that require talking to people, ATIPP requests, verifiable sources, etc. are hard.

    Please use locally relevant photos!
The photo is of a codfish being picked out of a codtrap in Newfoundland or Labrador prior to 1992! (Codtraps have not been part of the fishery since the moratorium on Northern Cod in 1992 and likely/unfortunately never will again) Neither the codtrap nor the cod fish will, in the foreseeable future, be part of the NFMTC field of training.
Maybe a picture of a char coming out of a net, the Pang fishplant, the new BFC trawler, even a sealift ship since the organisation is not exclusive to fisheries?
In any event it’s good news and hopefully Mr Martin will bring new energy and direction to an organisation that has the potential to assist many Inuit in securing marine careers.

Nunavut. One day a majority of Nunavut positions will be held by Inuit. Whenever it is not possible, they should be term trainer positions with succession planning.
