A new Rankin Inlet hamlet council member could be selected at Monday’s council meeting.

Application forms for the position were available until Aug. 29 and a “number of appointment applications” were received, Darren Flynn, the hamlet’s senior administrative officer, said in an email to Nunatsiaq News.

“Pending council’s review, a selection may be made at that time,” he said of the Sept. 9 meeting.

Flynn didn’t specify how many applications were received by the hamlet.

He also did not identify the candidates hoping to be named to council through a vote by councillors.

The new representative will fill the vacancy that opened after Art Sateana resigned from his council seat in July for personal reasons.

Sateana was acclaimed to hamlet council in October 2023 at the age of 27, along with six other members.

I wonder what the process is for selection? As it is they take names only, nothing else. How do they decide based on that?

Previously, council would vote on applicants to join. I haven’t kept up to date on the news but sounds like the same system this time.

I understand that, but what do they base their selection on if all they have is a name, nothing else?
