Do you know someone who supports and inspires others to use Inuktut?

If so, you might want to think about nominating that person for Nunavut’s 2019 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

The Council of the Federation is made up of the premiers of Canada’s 13 territories and provinces and meets twice each year.

Every year, each of the 13 premiers names a literacy award winner for their province or territory.

In Nunavut, Premier Joe Savikataaq will present the territory’s award winner with a medallion and a certificate, the Government of Nunavut said in a public service announcement.

And in Nunavut, the criteria are broad—it can be someone who inspires the use of Inuktut through oral, written or artistic expression.

“Nominate someone who has gone above and beyond to support and encourage others to develop their literacy skills—a student, a teacher, a community volunteer, an elder or a co-worker,” the GN announcement said.

Last year’s winner was Elizabeth Tunnuq, a well-known elder and artist from Baker Lake.

The 2017 winner was longtime educator Elizabeth Dean.

This year, the deadline for nominations falls on May 31, 2019.

The GN says that to nominate someone, or to get more information, you can contact Wende Halonen at 867-975-6048 or whalonen@gov.nu.ca.
