Non-Inuktitut dispatchers doing fine
I would like to comment on the article in Sept.10 issue of Nunatsiaq News (Iqaluit can’t find Inuktitut dispatchers). It’s beyond me why Lynda Gunn insists on stirring up trouble when it comes to Town Council meetings.
Perhaps she mean well but she should think a little more about the consequences of her speaking. I do agree that there should be an Inuktitut or especially a billingual dispatcher, as it would definitely help with understanding many emergency calls, but does she not think that the Town is trying their very best to fulfill that requirement the best they can?
There is no way that any bilingual speaking Inuk could be forced to take the job if they don’t show interest in that field of work. If anyone should know, it definitely would be Lynda that the Town’s biggest hiring policy is sternly hiring qualified Inuks first and foremost.
Why on earth would she be trying to disturb things when the system and the dedicated employees they have now fulfilling the job is going along terrifically? They are hard-working individuals who undergo a great deal of stress, verbal abuse and all kinds of other ordeals that many people in the public are unaware of. She stated that perhaps the wages should be increased to interest the Inuks to apply for the position.
Well, that damn well should have been done years ago because those guys and gals most definitely deserve it and have missed out for long enough. Why would it be even mentioned that the wages should be increased to interest Inuks.Do you realize how that makes you sound Lynda?
I know I sure do and I would bet so do a whole lot of other readers. And even worse Lynda made a statement and I quote,”We should feel good about providing the service”.
If you would rather see the service go belly-up and four honest hard-working individuals become jobless, you surely better pray no one in your family including yourself become hurt in an accident or need to be rushed to the hospital urgently, because there is no one who could do as good a job as the ones who are presently there.
I would like to state that I am only venting my opinion and I am not trying to offend anyone, but there were just too many things in that article that really got to me and this Town is becoming too too much when it comes to all this little bickering.
I mean wouldn’t think that if there was an Inuk who could fill all of the criteria to fill the position that it would of been done by now?
Unfortunately the Town lost one of there Inuk dispatchers to the bylaw department, but at least there’s an Inuk bylaw officer. Right Again, thank-you
