Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. is collecting health information from Inuit across Nunavut.

The Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey is designed and the data collected is owned by Inuit. Representatives from the four land claim organizations across Inuit Nunangat, including NTI, are responsible for conducting the surveys in their areas.

The survey, which translates as How are we doing now?, aims improve the well-being of Nunavut Inuit by providing information that can influence government policies, said a July 18 news release from NTI.

It’s national in scope because Inuit in other parts of Canada are being surveyed but the Nunavut data will be owned and stored by NTI.

Data collection will be taking place over the next few months. Representatives have already been to Pond Inlet and plan to visit Sanikiluaq, Sanirajak and Gjoa Haven in August.

“Information collected will be used for many purposes including planning, informing policy decisions, improving programs, and developing new ones where required,” said Annie Thomlinson, communications manager for Qanuippitaa?, in an email to Nunatsiaq News.

Nunavut Inuit will be hired in roles such as regional co-ordinators, interviewers, interpreters, and support workers with training and support provided, she said.

“Once we are in a community, we will provide training for the staff, host a community event inviting community members to come and learn about the survey, then our team will start reaching out to selected individuals to take part in the survey,” said Thomlinson.

Participants are selected at random from the NTI enrolment list. Participation is voluntary, Thomlinson said, and participants will be compensated for the time that it takes to complete the survey.

Data analysis of the survey results will take place at the regional and national level before being shared to the Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey website.

i applaud NTI for this. random selected people? Can we ask how many people were interviewed? i did see a couple of people at the coop. could this have been more wide spread and canvas more people for a broader spectrum? are statistics included such as crime rates? that would help bring a more realistic photo or baseline to compare to future studies. Pond has a staggering crime rate..how can this be helped?

Soo NTI is going into these small communities and then using untrained community members to collect sensitive health data on their neighbours and co-workers? I cant even begin to enumerate the number of ways that this kind of plan can go very badly sideways.

Oh great! More surveys and consultations. NU, the Nations Capital of Surveys, Studies and Consultations. So indecisive and weak that NU always needs them. Apply, lather, rinse and reapply. The NU way. Same cycle.

Another survey to sit on a shelf and computer drive.

Do they have an end-goal with this survey? Will they actually take any action depending on the outcome?

Is this cough cough “health study” to look as if doing something but continue to ignore the growing elephant health change in the room when started January 6, 2021 and onward?

Just as other commenters have said, NTI continues to demonstrate its expertise in wastage and incompetence. We could say more but what’s the use?

So I gather health issues and concerns within Nunavut are felt and experienced by Inuit ONLY.
Can we not include the other 15% of our population in this survey?

NTI is not responsible for the non-Inuit population.

Yet the data collected is supposed to inform/influence government policy…

Health centre often gets busy during night hours with bigger communities. With health centres with their security, gn can somehow fix their working hours and have health centre calling centre or head quarters for nurses for them to focus on their jobs. Please change their ways and Appy correct hours to all members and community

The $40 million Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey will provide an overall picture of the health and well-being of Inuit in all regions – what is going well and what areas need to be improved. This money will be spent on Inuit, by Inuit to research Inuit health information.

For the first time, this national survey will bring Inuit from across Inuit Nunangat together in partnership. The Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey data collection will take place in every community across Inuit Nunangat – the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, Nunavut, Nunavik, and Nunatsiavut. It will also take place with Inuit in Ottawa for the first round of the survey and may be expanded to other urban centres in subsequent rounds.

The Qanuippitaa? National Inuit Health Survey is more than just a survey. The design and implementation of the survey along with the analysis, dissemination and use of its results are intended to contribute to short- and long-term changes that ultimately improve the health and well-being of Inuit over time.

$40 million = 40 housing units…arguably the intersection of health issues in Nunavut: Housing. How about building some houses instead of consulting on issues that are already well-known.

Another opportunity for the Inuit to see what type of health care we SHOULD GET!
I had been a community rep. During the last hooraa of Qanugitpiitalli. NOTHING came of it. We received a piece of paper thanking us for participating. With the LAB results of each test taken.

    Here’s your health problems!
    Good luck
    Have fun
See you on our next round🫡
