The Nunavik Housing Bureau wants to help residents better understand the way housing works in the region.

A new campaign that will roll out next week across all 14 communities aims to answer common questions, including where housing come from, how homes are allocated, and how leasing works, said Maude Bouthillette, the bureau’s communications co-ordinator.

“We’re trying to do something a little bit more dynamic in how we’re giving the information, because the information is important but not necessarily fun to read through,” Bouthillette said in an interview.

To make the information easier to digest, the housing bureau is producing videos that will be adapted into posters and radio segments.

The campaign is divided into three main topics planned to run through the end of the year, though rollout could continue into 2026, Bouthillette said.

Nunavik Housing Bureau manages 4,004 housing units, which is 98 per cent of housing in the region.

Bouthillette said the housing bureau doesn’t build houses itself — it collaborates on that with Makivvik Corp., Kativik Regional Government and Nayumivik Landholding Corp.

The housing bureau takes an overseeing role once construction is finished by allocating units to families and supervising maintenance and repairs.

Updates will be posted at intervals on each community’s respective Facebook page.

“We want their feedback,” Bouthillette said of response from residents. “Is this format something that they like? We would love to see that.”

There will also be an online platform as part of the campaign where tenants can submit questions.

Can they also inform us on the financing, contract awarding (tender process? agreements awarding contracts to..?). Efficiency rating in relation to build costs would be nice too. Also, how insurance works on a unit and its systems. How often certain systems need to be changed in order to remain covered by insurance, such as furnace, roof, hot water heater, windows and what not. Also, do we need to purchase renters insurance from our banks/ insurance companies? If so, do these companies have benchmarked rates for our region? – side question – Whats’ the renters insurance market look like in Nunavut I wonder (do their rates seem fairly calculated?). Also, do we have an beneficiary representative at Society Habitation Quebec? Is the SHQ willing to hire a beneficiary as a liaison to learn more about the administrative structure and decision making processes, bring that back to us? There is a lot of things I’d like to know.

    What percentage goes to salary?

    What percentage goes to repairs?

    What percentage goes to materials?

What percentage goes to operating costs?

    Yeah, why same old-style build?

Can’t they build one floor more roomy style not just upstairs that are link to dangerous fall from upstairs?

How safe is 5 bed-room upstairs with many small children, and their out side stair ways needs to improve too to make it less dangerous and less steep.

And stop giving numbers for applicants that are waiting for years!
Thought Housing committee use to have meeting first to give out houses, not just regular workers giving numbers, this gotta stop period!
