A Nunavik man faces a charge of manslaughter for the death of a 37-year-old woman.

On Nov. 1, Kativik Regional Police Force officers responded to an emergency call about a fire at a home in Salluit.

When the police arrived at the home, they discovered the lifeless body of a woman in one of the bedrooms. Mary Saviadjuk, 37, was later declared deceased at the local health-care centre.

The KRPF turned the investigation over to the Sûreté du Québec.

Police later arrested a 42-year-old suspect, Paulusie Usuituayuk.

He appeared in court on Nov. 4 on a count of manslaughter, the SQ confirmed this week. Usuituayuk remains in detention pending his next court appearance.

Investigators have not said how Saviadjuk died, nor have they indicated the relationship between the victim and the accused.
