A Nunavik man died in an early morning fire in Kuujjuaq this week.
On Monday, July 20, police and firefighters in the Nunavik community received reports of a fire at about 4:40 a.m. at a cabin located on the way to Kuujjuaq’s dump.
The Kativik Regional Police Force said responders were able to put out the blaze, but a man was pulled unconscious from the building.
The 67-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, the KRPF said in a July 21 news release.
The victim has been identified as Mark T. Gordon, a local business owner in Kuujjuaq.
Gordon served as vice-president of economic development at Makivik Corp. for several years in the late 1990s. He was well-known in the community for the fireworks displays he helped put on for Canada Day and Aqpik Jam each summer.
The investigation into the fire has since been turned over to the Sûreté du Québec, which will bring in a crime scene technician to analyse the scene of the fire.
Police said they do not suspect foul play at this point.
In its July 21 release, the KRPF offered condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
