A man in Puvirnituq is under arrest after police say he attacked two people with a pocket knife inside a residence on the weekend.
On Saturday at approximately 12:40 p.m., a 35-year-old man who police say was intoxicated allegedly attacked the two occupants of the home, causing non-life threatening injuries to their faces, said Nunavik Police Service deputy Chief Jean-Francois Morin in an email Monday.
Emergency services were contacted soon after the attack and police officers arrested the man after bystanders pointed out the suspect to them.
Morin did not provide the suspect’s name when Nunatsiaq News asked. The man has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, one count each of uttering death threats, resisting arrest, and mischief.
The man’s first court appearance was to be by telephone on Monday afternoon.
This crap is getting out of hand.
For too many years, the sentencing has the upper hand in making situations worse in Nunavik. Sentencing by the courts are letting Nunavik down. By not issuing an adequate punishment leads to increased crime. This aspect of the justice system is a contributing factor, it’s amongst other neglected interventions that increase crime, all in the goal to deal with it. Application of principles and special considerations are a joke. It’s like an oxymoron world , whereby we’re having to apply these same principles to the courts for they don’t know what they are doing , thereby need specific understanding of inadequate sentencing procedures for they are ineffective, and so is the court in Nunavik.
Justice isn’t served when a society imposes its own standards on another while it is widely demonstrated that the way our court system works, it increases violent crime rates and risks or recidivism. Incarceration of Indigenous offenders, in particular Inuit, elevates the risks of violence to the communities and that is supported by all studies, inquests and statistics. Flying courts to communities where they know nobody and don’t understand the language and culture is recipe for disaster and that’s exactly what Nunavik is getting.
Nunavik if I told you anything, I told you this: Alcohol rules your life, and determination of your length of time in existence. It’s not that you are the only place like that, but you are unique in that it controls your everyday living. Alcohol has many restrictions in Nunavik, it’s a restricted product, not like the free will of a Canadian or Quebec society. You have only certain amounts and certain times to buy and you are not free from its control, you are restricted because it drives you crazy, and you break the law , hurt and kill, go to jail , lose your kids, you are crippled and many are brain damage. Give it up or you will continue to hurt and die. Nunavik, doomed from alcohol.
