After an increase in unlicensed lotteries appearing on social media, Nunavut’s Department of Community and Government Services reminds residents that “conducting a lottery event without a licence is a Criminal Code offence.”

According to the press release, “only charitable or religious not-for-profit groups whose proceeds are used for charitable or religious purposes qualify for a lottery licence.”

Raffles or lotteries for personal reasons are not eligible for a lottery licence.

The release also cautions Nunavummiut about participating in lotteries or raffles that don’t display a licence number.

Those who suspect possible fraud from an unlicensed lottery are urged to contact their local RCMP detachment.

Groups interested in finding out if they qualify for a lottery licence can contact the Consumer Affairs office at 1-866-223-8139.

Why should religions be exempt? They take money to brainwash people and are a liability to society. No more breaks for these charlatans

They may be popular but they neef yo be regulated for a reason. There are no protections for those that participate in unlicensed lotteries, you don’t know how your money is being handled or the process by which the winner is selected not to mention that you have no recourse should the organizer simply abscond with the proceeds …. caveat emptor.

Hello, God is Dead. My name is Paul Hitz and I am the Pastor of Iqaluit Baptist Church. As a Christian, Bible believer, and Pastor, I would like to kindly respond to your comment with an offer to personally meet you and have the opportunity to share with you what good churches do that are actually a great benefit to society. I know that there are many charlatans who steal and misrepresent the God that they claim, but this does not represent the whole of churches or God Himself. An online platform is not a great place for dialog, but I would be honored to meet you and discuss these things… and most of all to share with you the verifiable message of hope, healing, and forgiveness, not in a religious organization or man-made rituals, but in a personal relationship with GOD Himself, through Jesus Christ. Take care, my friend!

This is like J-walking. Its illigal bit no one does anything about it. Its a joke
Unless the GN is actually going to start charging people, this is just a waste of paper, and a waste of $ to publish it in the Nunatsiaq news.

Should see Nanavik for these ongoing elimination draws. People are buying into it, and losing big time. All,over Facebook. And the card games being advertised to raise personal money for skidoo races. One person recently paid for a wedding in Mexico from getting people to but tickets for many elimination draws over a number of years. It’s neive too to buy into it, but it’s out of control.
