The Government of Nunavut is warning about another cheese product recall issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency due to listeria contamination.

Issued by the federal agency on Oct. 14, the recall is for 12 organic cheeses by Farm Boy, L’Ancêtre and Life Smart, with expiry dates that range from Dec. 4, 2026, to July 30, 2027.

They include Swiss, cheddar, mozza-cheddar and mozzarella products.

The territorial Health Department shared the warning with Nunavummiut Monday in a public service announcement.

Listeria monocytogenes is bacteria that causes a type of infection known as listeriosis. It can cause vomiting, fever, muscle aches, headaches and neck stiffness.

Contaminated food may not appear spoiled, but it can still cause sickness, the announcement said. Nunavummiut should throw out recalled products or return it to the store they bought it from.

Pregnant women, elders and residents with compromised immune systems are particularly at risk, according to the federal agency’s statement.

The agency is investigating the source of the contamination and more recalls may follow, the agency’s website states.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall in September for Coaticook’s aged cheddar cheese, with a best before date of Aug. 3, also due to listeria contamination.

For the complete list of recalled items, residents can visit the Canadian Food Inspection Agency website.
