A former senior bureaucrat with the Hamlet of Taloyoak is alleged to have stolen nearly $300,000 from that hamlet, according to documents at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Iqaluit.
Ghulam Murtaza Gurmani, 60, faces three charges stemming from actions alleged to have taken place in Taloyoak while he was the senior administrative officer there, on or around Oct. 13, 2016.
Prosecutors who addressed Gurmani’s file in an Iqaluit courtroom Sept. 9 opted to proceed by indictment rather than by summary conviction.
Indictable offences are considered more serious and carry heavier penalties than summary offences.
Police charged Gurmani with theft, fraud and breach of trust on May 22. Police also charged Gurmani’s “associate,” Javed Mustafa, with theft over $5,000 and fraud.
Gurmani was not required to be present in court Sept. 9, according to the court record.
Police allege Gurmani stole $296,351.18 from the hamlet by “deceit, falsehood or other fraudulent means.”
Justice Sue Charlesworth scheduled Gurmani to appear before the Nunavut court in Iqaluit on Oct. 7 at 11 a.m.
