Nunavut suspends common travel area with Nunavik
Much of Nunavik remains under lockdown as region deals with ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks

Nunavut’s Department of Health has suspended the territory’s common travel area with Nunavik as the Quebec region remains mostly locked down due to ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, according to a Friday news release.
On Friday, the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services reported 14 new cases, adding to a total of 133 active cases across the region.
Unvaccinated travellers from Nunavik hoping to travel into Nunavut must quarantine for two weeks upon entry to the territory. Vaccinated Nunavummiut returning from Nunavik must self-monitor and wear a mask for 14 days upon their return home.
Vaccinated travellers from Nunavik may apply for an exemption through the Department of Health. The same rules apply to all vaccinated non-Nunavut residents.
“Cases of COVID-19 are rising in Nunavik and due to the increased risk of exposure to the virus, the travel area between Nunavik and Nunavut is now closed,” Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s chief public health officer, said in a news release. “Previous common travel area travel authorization between Nunavik and Nunavut is no longer valid.”
Earlier on Friday, Nunavik announced restrictions on Halloween activities, including a ban on parties and trick-or-treating in “red alert” areas.
