Ottawa police have charged an Inuk man from Nunavut with second-degree murder in the death of his mother.

Ottawa Police Service officers responded to a disturbance at a home in the city’s Vanier neighbourhood on Saturday afternoon, April 6, where they discovered the body of a woman.

Abigail Ootoova, 54, died in the incident. Ootoova was a well-known artist originally from Nunavut.

Her son, 29-year-old Jed Ootoova, has since been charged with second-degree murder.

The Ottawa Citizen reported that the accused has schizophrenia and was recently hospitalized with his mental illness.

But Ottawa police have not released any other details about what may have happened April 6.

They are still asking witnesses to come forward by contacting the OPS or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Earlier this year, Ottawa police charged Lennese Kublu, 18, and Dwight Brown, 28 in connection with the death of Kublu’s mother, Susan Kuplu-Irqittuq, 37.

They were charged with second-degree murder and indignity to human remains in relation to Kuplu-Irqittuq’s death.
