Nunavut government rules by tyranny

By NUNATSIAQ NEWS

Why is the Government of Nunavut so adamant about switching to central standard time? It is supposed to be accountable to the people that it serves. It states right in their vision:

“We are guided by a vision of government that:

Places people first;
Represents and is accountable and fair to all residents;
Is a servant for the people of Nunavut;
Seeks direction from the people;
Is shaped and belongs to the people of Nunavut…”
It further states that it, “…is a responsive, representative government that: …Works in partnership with individuals, families and communities to enhance their capacities and well-being… Is accountable to the people of Nunavut for all our actions.”

All you folks in the smaller communities, is the Nunavut Government all that? How could the Nunavut government be all that if it is such a centralized system of government? None of the communities put in their inputs as to the Nunavut cabinet’s decisions.

The decision to switch to the central time zone was not made in conjunction with consultations with the public. Apparently, the Nunavut leaders, i.e. government officials and mayors, made the decision for us Nunavummiut at their Nunavut leaders’ meeting a while back. They did not ask us small people whether we wanted it or not. They decided that it was for the best of Nunavummiut.

Even the ordinary MLAs were not as adamant about changing to the central time zone as those big-wigs, the ministers. In a form of government where decisions are made by consensus, we will always see this sort of thing.

Decisions will be made on our behalf, whether we agree with them or not. It is up to the cabinet to make those decisions as they see fit.

Who are we, as the public, to influence their decisions? We cannot change their decisions. We are not the opposition. The cabinet is supposed to serve us! But no, they are serving themselves and the public officials that are working for them.

Look at the ordinary MLAs. What can they do? They are supposed to be the “opposition” to the Cabinet. How could the ordinary MLAs be the opposition when they are in the same Standing Committees as the Ministers?

We need a better form of governance where we could really let the government be accountable to us. We cannot defeat their bills, nor could the ordinary MLAs. We can only wait for the next election and vote them out of office. This is tyranny.

(I am requesting now to have my name withheld from this letter, in case it is published, because I fear that there would be repercussions imposed on me, and my job might be terminated because of the fact that I publicly criticized the government in the manner that I did.)
