Nunavut’s Department of Finance gets new deputy minister

Daniel Young steps in with a long history of experience in the GN

By Nunatsiaq News

Daniel Young is the new deputy minister of finance.

Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok made the announcement Wednesday in a news release.

Young has been tapped to fill the role starting Monday, after serving as interim deputy minister since February.

He replaces Jeff Chown, after Chown’s retirement in January.

“We value and respect Mr. Young’s leadership and are fortunate that he continues to apply his skills and knowledge to our government operations,” said Akeeagok in the release.

In the past 16 years, Young has held roles such as the superintendent of insurance, director of fiscal policy, assistant deputy minister for the fiscal management branch, and director of the Nunavut Liquor and Cannabis Commission.

    Smart, Positive, All-Around Great Guy.

He has miles less experience than either Chown or Darcy brought to the role.

Why can’t the GN retain its deputies?

Yes definitely inexperienced. was not happy with 16 years. I was also looking for at least 17 years of experience in Nunavut finance.

Good luck Dan. I hope Finance will get behind paying a lot of professional positions in the GN more, since it is really not competitive with southern Canada anymore.

This Government needs to established a Financial institution in each 3 different regions due to NO accountability with Municipal Governments in each Financial office. The Financial Office has NO Education from accounting software program to NO background experience! When Finance position is filled the person has NO experience nor accountability on the Financial program.

The CG&S Minister actually needs to look out the window and Tap! This issue needs to be address and approach due to short-term crooks that administer Municipal Affairs & Services to Employment (hiring) committees such as elected Councillor’s! Notice this trend!?!

All these years on since Nunavut was set in motion, Inuit fill token do-nothing positions of privilege or joe-jobs or are multi-generational welfare recipients. Kabloonas like this man do the professional and managerial jobs. Weren’t Inuit supposed to be doing these jobs in the lands they claim? Structured schooling that includes universal physical education has to start in kindergarten and primary school so as to enable Inuit for the high-tech economy. And financial management.
