Nunavut’s reduced carbon tax credit has taken effect.

Nunavummiut who filed their 2023 taxes should have received their first payment for the 2024-25 fiscal year by July 5, the Finance Department announced Monday.

But instead of $308 per person per year, the territorial carbon tax credit is now $100 per year, issued as a $25 payment every three months.

The federal government introduced the carbon tax in 2019 to help reduce consumption of carbon-based fuels. In April, fuel prices in Nunavut went up due to an increase in the federal tax.

Nunavut’s rebate is intended to help offset the increase in fuel prices caused by these costs.

The Government of Nunavut pays the carbon tax rebate out of its own budget based on the amount of carbon tax collected each year, according to the Department of Finance’s information page on the tax.

Speaking in the legislative assembly in May, Finance Minister Lorne Kusugak said the three-year exemption on home heating fuel announced by the federal government last October significantly decreased the GN’s carbon tax revenue.

The decrease also adheres to the GN’s plans to slowly reduce its subsidy by 10 per cent each year until the rebate phases out completely in four years.

The next payment will be made Oct. 5, and continue on a quarterly basis until 2028.

Nunavummiut who have not filed taxes but are eligible for the carbon tax credit can update their personal information with the Canada Revenue Agency to receive any benefits they are entitled to.

Where did everyone think that Solar Panels for their House and Cabin was getting paid for from? These “free money” programs the GN has needs to come from somewhere and this is where that carbon tax money in Nunavut is going, as well for countless “studies” I am sure.
