The federal government has announced $77-million in funding for a multi-use small craft harbour to be built in Arctic Bay.
The harbour will include a breakwater, launch ramp, fixed wharf for larger vessels, floating wharves for small craft vessels, dredging for the harbour basin and an entrance channel, according to a Fisheries and Oceans Canada press release issued on Oct. 2.
“This harbour will create opportunities for hunters, fishers and families to be more independent. Food sovereignty and economic prosperity will follow,” said Nunavut MP Lori Idlout in the release.
Construction began in August and will continue until 2029. It’s expected to be operational for the following open water season.
Pilitak Enterprises Ltd., an Inuit-owned construction company based in Iqaluit, is the contractor.
The contract created between the company and the hamlet includes an Inuit benefits plan to support local training and employment.
According to the release, the federal government is continuing to work with northern communities to help with development and create more resources for residents of the north such as this new harbour.

I’m not a liberal fan but the last 7-8 years I’ve seen more done more funds spent in the north than any other government, all the new infrastructure, money for housing, all these new funding will pay dividends down the road, I did t vote for them but I take my hat off to what they have done so far, this Carny guy has been good for us too internationally, opening new trade partners, dealing with that orange man, I’m glad he is there, I would be worried for Pierre and Canada if he had not been elected, I’m thinking we’d be the 51st state by now with Pierre leading our country.
Do housing first
