Ottawa pays for Pang flood damage
Nunavut is getting a rebate for money it spent getting the hamlet of Pangnirtung up and running in the aftermath of torrential floods last summer.
Federal public safety minister Peter Van Loan announced July 8 that the Government of Nunavut will receive about $5 million from Ottawa under the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements program.
Last June, a flash of melt-water swept down the Duval River and wrecked two bridges cutting Pangnirtung in half and interrupting water, sewage and garbage service.
The GN placed a rush order on a temporary bridge that had to be shipped from England.
The hamlet was also forced to dump raw sewage into Pangnirtung fiord.
Premier Eva Aariak said there’s still work to be done in Pangnirtung, including road and culvert construction and a new, permanent bridge across the Duval that will be complete within five years.
