Territorial cabinet minister Pamela Gross is taking a one-month leave from her ministerial duties in order to give birth.
The leave is effective immediately, the Government of Nunavut announced Monday in a news release.
Gross, who is deputy premier, also oversees four government ministries. She is expected to return Oct. 16.
While she is gone, David Joanasie will act as deputy premier and minister of education. Joanna Quassa will fill in as minister of culture and heritage, minister of languages, and minister responsible for seniors. Both Joanasie and Quassa have experience in those roles.
Gross plans to retain her duties as MLA for Cambridge Bay during the leave.
She was elected in 2021, defeating incumbent and former minister Jeannie Ehaloak. Before she was elected, Gross had been Cambridge Bay’s mayor since 2017.
