Pangnirtung voters will choose a new mayor in a byelection March 2 following the resignation of mayor Lynn Mike late last year.

The hamlet shared the Elections Nunavut announcement on Facebook that nominations for the mayoral race will open Jan. 26 and close Jan. 30 at 2 p.m.

Candidates must file a declaration of candidacy in person with the returning officer at the People’s Community Centre during designated hours throughout the week, the notice said.

Mike, who was elected mayor in 2023, stepped down on Dec. 3. Under Nunavut law, municipal councils can either appoint one of their members to fill a mayoral vacancy or call a byelection. Pangnirtung’s council opted for a byelection.

Deputy Mayor Sheila Kilabuk is currently serving as mayor on an interim basis.

Elections Nunavut will hold a mobile poll Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for voters unable to easily access a polling station, including elders, people with disabilities and their caregivers.

Advance voting will also take place Feb. 23 from noon to 7 p.m. at the People’s Community Centre.

On election day, polls will open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The voters list is available at returning officer Melissa Akulukjuk’s office. The returning officer is responsible for overseeing the byelection and ensuring voting is conducted in accordance with Nunavut’s electoral laws.
