Eric Lawlor is the new mayor of Pangnirtung.

During a byelection held on Monday, Aug. 24, Lawlor received 97 votes compared with the 77 votes that Stevie Komoartok received.

An additional two votes were rejected, with a total of 176 residents voting. The Baffin Island community has about 1,500 residents.

The byelection was prompted by the death of the previous mayor, Hezakiah Oshutapik, who passed away in April.

Lawlor, who is currently Pangnirtung’s community economic development officer, has also been involved with the hamlet’s youth council and the Inuit Ilagiit wellness society.

Komoartok, a longtime Pangnirtung hamlet councillor, was the mayor prior to Oshutapik.
