Peter Tapatai to be next recipient of the Order of Nunavut

At the conclusion of Monday night’s sitting of the legislature, Paul Quassa, Speaker of the legislative assembly, announced that the next recipient of the Order of Nunavut would be Baker Lake businessman Peter Tapatai, shown here in 2015 with then-MP Leona Aglukkaq. Successful Baker Lake businessman Peter Tapatai will be the next recipient of the Order of Nunavut.
Nunavut’s highest honour, established in 2010, is handed out each year to individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to Nunavut’s cultural, social or economic well-being.
“This year’s recipient of the Order of Nunavut is well-known throughout the territory for his commitment to sustainable community economic development, Inuit entrepreneurship and cultural pride,” said Paul Quassa, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, on Monday, Sept. 28.
In addition to founding Peter’s Expediting Ltd. in Baker Lake, Tapatai is also is celebrated for his work with the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation and the creation of the iconic character “Super Shamou.”
Tapatai’s contributions have garnered him “numerous awards and recognitions,” said Quassa, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee medal.
Tapatai will be presented with the Order of Nunavut at a later date.
