Nunavummiut can expect to be alerted Wednesday afternoon.

Across the territory that day at 2 p.m. ET, there will be a test of Alert Ready, Canada’s national public alerting system. A similar test will be conducted that day in Quebec, at 1:55 p.m. ET.

Residents and businesses will receive a test message over television, radio and compatible wireless broadband devices such as cellphones or mobile devices.

There will be no action required of the public during the test, and it is not possible to opt out of receiving alerts, Alert Ready announced in a news release.

Alert Ready delivers critical and potentially life-saving warnings related to weather, fire and public health and safety, including extreme weather alerts and Amber Alerts.

In those instances when an alert is issued, the public is expected to stop, listen and respond as directed by the message. People will only receive an alert on their cellphone or mobile device if it is in an area where the alert is valid.

Annual testing ensures the system is working as intended, and is meant to encourage public awareness and emergency preparedness. Similar tests are being carried out this week across all the provinces and territories except Prince Edward Island.

There have been more than 800 public emergency messages delivered by the Alert Ready system across Canada to date in 2022, according to the release.
