Picking up the slack

A group of students in the Akitsiraq law school have begun a process they believe the government should have started a long time ago.

The students are taking it upon themselves to complete a line-by-line review of the proposed Education Act in English and Inuktitut.

They have collected education legislation from all provinces and territories in Canada, and have also embarked on a comparative study of education legislation in the country.

“We are lucky enough to have a constitutional lawyer and a lawyer who is an expert in language rights whose advice we can rely on,” said Madeline Redfern, a student in the program, during her presentation before the legislative assembly’s standing committee this week.

The group hopes to present a written analysis to the committee before the committee completes its review.
