A four-year-old Nunavik boy has died from what appears to be a severe head injury.
Kativik Regional Police Force officers in Akulivik responded to a call on Tuesday, April 2, about an unconscious child at a home in the Hudson coast community of about 630 people.
The boy was taken to the local health centre, where he died soon afterward.
The Sûreté du Québec, which has since taken over the investigation, said the young victim will undergo an autopsy to determine his cause of death.
The Journal de Montréal reported allegations the boy was fighting with an older sibling at home Tuesday morning, when the older child threw a snowmobile helmet at the four-year-old’s head.
The four-year-old never regained consciousness.
Akulivik’s Tukisiniarvik school, where the older brother was a student, was closed on Wednesday to give time to community members to grieve. Kativik Ilisarniliriniq said a school team prepared meals for affected family members, while the school board brought in additional support resources.
Tukisiarvik re-opened Thursday, at which point the school board made counselling available to staff and students, KI said in a statement.
Police continue to investigate the death.
