Pond Inlet’s caribou harvest has closed.

The allocation of 46 caribou from the total allowable harvest from the Baffin Island caribou population for 2025-26 has been reached, a Department of Environment news release said Wednesday.

The harvest is closed now until July 1.

Anyone who harvested caribou prior to the closure notice must still report it to the wildlife office.

Harvesting after the end of the season is a violation of Nunavut’s Wildlife Act. Any violations will be investigated.

The total allowable harvest was established by the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board to support the recovery of the Baffin Island caribou population. It’s critical to ensuring the sustainability of the herd and for future harvesting, the announcement said.
