A training centre in Pond Inlet will be ready to accept students this fall, says Gwen Healey Akearok, minister responsible for Nunavut Arctic College.
Construction of the Pond Inlet Research and Training Centre is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, she said Wednesday in the legislative assembly.
Prospective students will be eligible to enrol in the college’s winter semester, which is set to begin in September. Only Pond Inlet residents are eligible to apply.
The new academic venue will offer courses that include first-year interpreter/translator, first-year fur production and design, and personal support worker training.
“I encourage residents of Pond Inlet to learn about these programs and to consider applying,” Akearok said.
The $34-million project is funded through the Mary River Inuit Impact and Benefits Agreement, Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency, the Government of Canada and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc.
Training equipment for the centre, including heavy equipment simulators, was funded with $2.1 million from the federal government’s Indigenous Natural Resource Partnerships program, which is administered by the Qikiqtani Inuit Association.
Nunavut Arctic College is planning recruitment efforts in the hamlet in coming months, Akearok said.
