Residents in Nunavik and across Quebec can expect to hear a test of the province’s Alert Ready system this week.

The test is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:55 p.m., the Kativik Regional Government announced Friday. It will be broadcasted via cellular networks, TV and radio and is meant to verify that the alert system works and reaches the communities.

To receive the test alert, mobile devices must be compatible and be connected to LTE or 5G network and cell tower coverage.

Kativik Regional Government encouraged people to note the exact time they receive the test alert message and whether they received it via phone, radio or television.

Afterward, they can contact either the civil security department at KRG at civilsecuritystaff@krg.ca or Quebec’s Ministry of Public Security at kaouthar.abderrazak@mps.gouv.qc.ca to describe their experience.

The goal is to ensure the system will be effective at making people aware of emergencies and events that threaten public safety.

Using a cell phone while driving in Quebec is illegal, with penalties including a $300-$600 fine and 5 demerit points. The law prohibits using a hand-held device for any purpose.

When that annoying alert sounds for millions of drivers in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada should all drivers grab their phones and acknowledge the alert while they are driving? Or is everyone expected to endure the noise until they reach their destination (since it is illegal to access a phone even at a red light)? Or, is everyone expected to simultaneously pull over to the side of the road to deal with the noise???
