Daniel Qavvik, who was Nunavut’s environment minister, resigned from cabinet Wednesday for “personal reasons,” according to a news release from Premier P.J. Akeeagok’s office.

Qavvik, who is from Sanikiluaq and serves as MLA for Hudson Bay, is the sixth minister to leave Akeeagok’s cabinet since the 2021 election. He’s the third minister to depart this year alone, following the resignations of Joelie Kaernerk and of Karen Nutarak.

Before his resignation, Qavvik was minister of energy, languages, and culture and heritage, in addition to wearing the environment minister’s hat.

The premier’s news release did not provide additional information about why Qavvik resigned.

As part of a cabinet shuffle, Akeeagok is taking on the roles of minister of culture and heritage and minister responsible for languages.

Community and Government Services Minister David Joanasie is adding minister of environment and minister responsible for energy to his portfolios.

Qavvik became a minister after being selected by MLAs in a Sept. 2023 leadership conference that followed the last territorial election.

Last week, he was one of 10 MLAs to stand by Akeeagok and vote down a motion to remove the premier from office.

It is everywhere. Nunavut in crisis and not to do with the Premier’s office. I hear our Premier so open, wanting to hear, work together etc.

Instead, if it was you, what is your solution(s)??
There are serious addictions and families are suffering as well as other issues. Some are also Canada-wide but more so in the North. We need to pull together and offer solutions and work together too. Not working together will make it worse.

Why are we facing cabinet shortages when Nunavut’s Premier is renowned for exceptional leadership, tackling issues with seriousness and thoughtfulness, recognizing the territory’s monumental history, and showing genuine value and respect for its elderly population?

PJ was very supportive of Daniel in this position and both have been doing an excellent job, it is clear that this was for personal reasons not anything to do with anything else. Daniel was working very hard and really appreciated PJs support so please respect and support them

Can we get a better system, please?

Have we tried a Sorting Hat?

A lottery, like random selection of Ministers through the voter rolls or jury lists?

I guess we already have skill-testing questions, but maybe add a polygraph?

It must be really difficult coming from the smaller communities to be a minister at the GN, our GN is so foreign, very westernized, you have to follow western rules and follow a western script that goes against your culture and Inuit way.
It must get very tiring and frustrating having to follow these western rules and scripts all the time.
Some people are much better at it, others who have a stronger connection to Nunavut and Inuit unfortunately don’t.
