Rankin Inlet RCMP say they have arrested a Whale Cove man for illegally trying to bring alcohol into his home community.

In a news release, the RCMP said they were investigating an unrelated matter on Feb. 16 when they determined that the man was in possession of alcohol without a permit.

Whale Cove has a restricted system for alcohol. That means an alcohol education committee regulates the purchase, sale and import of alcohol.

The police obtained a search warrant under the Nunavut Liquor Act, and “a large amount of liquor was located and seized.”

The RCMP did not say how much alcohol was seized.

The 38-year-old Whale Cove man, whom the police have not named, was charged under the Nunavut Liquor Act with unlawfully possessing alcohol for sale.

The man is scheduled to appear in court on March 9 in Rankin Inlet.

Nunavut RCMP also reminded residents to contact the police at 867-979-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 at any time they see a crime happening, or to provide information about a crime.
