The RCMP says one of its officers faces criminal charges related to an incident that occurred in Arctic Bay during the winter of 2020.

Const. Luke Tomkinson was charged with three offences on Dec. 22 last year, more than two months after the charges were laid the RCMP announced Friday in a late afternoon news release.

The incident occurred while Tomkinson was working as a “relief member and responding to a call for service,” RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Pauline Melanson wrote in the release.

Tomkinson is charged with assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, and uttering threats.

The release provided no further details on the incident or the date that it occurred, and did not indicate whether Tomkinson remains on active duty.

“The conduct of police officers is paramount in maintaining the trust of the communities they serve,” Melanson wrote.

“The criminal charges laid are very serious. These allegations do not reflect the integrity of our individual members nor does it represent what we stand for as a police service.”

According to the Nunavut Courts website, Tomkinson has appeared in court twice this year related to these charges, including on Feb. 9 when he was to enter a plea.

The courts website does not indicate whether he did enter a plea and if so, how he pleaded. His next court date is April 3.
