RCMP to resume search for Pond Inlet teen missing since October
Original search for Rico Akpaleapik ended last year; renewed search to start Saturday
Increased police presence will be seen in Pond Inlet starting Saturday as RCMP resume the search for missing teenager Rico Akpaleapik, who was last seen nearly 10 months ago on Oct. 2, 2024. Residents should expect to see ground search teams and low-flying helicopters, police say. (File photo)
RCMP say they will resume the search for Rico Akpaleapik starting Saturday, more than 10 months after the teenager was last seen in Pond Inlet.
Akpaleapik, who was 15 at the time, was last seen in Pond Inlet on Oct. 2, 2024.
A search launched soon afterward involved additional RCMP officers, an RCMP police dog flown in from Quebec, aerial drones, Canadian Rangers and community volunteers using ATVs and on foot.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and Canadian Coast Guard also supported the search.
Despite that, no trace of the teenager was found and the active search was suspended last year on Oct. 29.
The renewed search will involve a joint effort with Nunavut Emergency Management, the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary, Baffinland Iron Mines Corp., and local search and rescue volunteers, Nunavut RCMP said in a news release Friday.
The release advises residents to expect an increased police presence, search teams on the ground, and possibly low-flying helicopters during the operation.
RCMP spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie told Nunatsiaq News on Friday that no new information or tips led police to resume the search for the missing teen.
The case remains open as a missing persons investigation, the news release said.
