Human remains found near Kugluktuk have been identified as an 11-year-old boy police say went missing a year ago.

On July 15, the RCMP responded to a report that human remains had been found at Four Mile Bay, about 10 kilometres from Kugluktuk, a community of about 1,380. Officers recovered the remains, which were transported back to Kugluktuk, Nunavut RCMP said in a news release.

On Friday, RCMP announced that in working with the Nunavut coroner’s office and the family of the deceased, the remains had been identified. The news release did not name the child.

Last year, RCMP and Kugluktuk family members searched several days for Jonas Klengenberg, 11, who was last seen on Aug. 1, 2024, after leaving his home early that morning.

Multiple searches failed to locate him, the Nunavut RCMP said at the time.

The RCMP found no sign of “criminality” in the incident, spokesperson Sgt. George Henrie said in an email to Nunatsiaq News.
