Services commemorating Remembrance Day will be held Tuesday morning in Rankin Inlet and Iqaluit.

At each event, a moment of silence will commemorate the signing of the armistice to end the First World War in 1918 and honour the more than 118,000 Canadians who have died in armed conflicts Canada has participated in.

Both communities’ municipal offices will be closed all day Tuesday.

In Rankin Inlet, the Royal Canadian Legion branch 169 will host a ceremony in the community hall at the old arena. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:45 a.m.

Cadets will take part, along with representatives from the Rankin Inlet Fire Department, RCMP and the Canadian Rangers.

Bylaw, fire and emergency services will operate on an on-call basis and airport maintenance services will be available on Remembrance Day.

Municipal offices in Rankin Inlet and Iqaulit will be closed all day Tuesday.

Iqalummiut can attend the Royal Canadian Legion branch 168 ceremony being held at Cadet Hall on Tuesday. Doors open at 10:30 a.m. and the ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m.

Legion members will gather following the Iqaluit service. City of Iqaluit offices will remain closed throughout the day.

“This day offers an opportunity to come together in gratitude and reflection as we honour those who have served,” said Geoff Byrne, a City of Iqaluit spokesperson, in a news release.

The Iqaluit Aquatic Centre will be open from noon until 4 p.m. on Remembrance Day but the Arnaitok and Arctic Winter Games arenas will be closed.

Residential garbage collection and water and sewer services will operate on their regular schedule, the city’s release said.
