A Resolute Bay man charged with first-degree murder, assault and indignity to human remains will return to court next month to set a date for a preliminary hearing.
RCMP arrested Babah Kalluk, 44, on Nov. 23 after discovering the body of a woman at a home in Resolute Bay. Kalluk, who remains in custody, attended court in Iqaluit virtually on Tuesday.
The victim was Zipporah Kalluk, Babah Kalluk’s mother.
“We recently received a substantial disclosure that puts us in a position to be able to schedule a preliminary inquiry in this matter,” said Matthew Eaton-Kent, one of Babah Kalluk’s lawyers.
The preliminary hearing will determine whether the Crown’s evidence against Kalluk supports the case proceeding to trial.
Kalluk is scheduled to appear in court again June 10 to set the date and length of the preliminary hearing.
