Sand and clear driveways or service trucks might not come, warns City of Iqaluit

Extreme temperature swings over past week have left roads ‘extremely slippery’

Iqaluit residents are being reminded to keep their driveways clear and well sanded to allow city service trucks access to homes and other properties.

Icy road conditions forced water, sewer and garbage truck services to be temporarily paused Wednesday until road and driveway conditions were safe enough for large vehicles, a City of Iqaluit public service announcement issued Wednesday said.

Those services resumed Thursday.

However, houses where driveways aren’t clear and safe may be skipped by service trucks until they are cleared, the release said.

Extreme temperature swings and freezing rain made road surfaces slippery over the past week.

At the start of the week, temperatures hovered around -20 C but rose to 5 C by Thursday only to fall again, causing a flash freeze across the city. Temperatures Friday were about -10 C, according to Environment Canada.

City crews have worked to break up ice on the roads and have been sanding to improve road safety.

Those sewer truck engines is loud in smaller communties. With inuit in control, its not perfect. Workers drivers typical inuk person just like me. No safety sytem in place or safe and public in smaller places.

Facebook is not a community billboard, and the City and GN’s reliance on it is just lazyness.

Set up an SMS list, send someone out with notices, buy a friggin megaphone …

        Do better City of Iqaluit.

Maybe the city should make some sand available for people to pick up. Everything is frozen. It’s not like we can just buy it in the store.

I noticed the city provided one bucket of sand per household today. Great news.
There should be a place that we can get sand from throughout the year. Even if they charge a small fee.

Seriously? The City has failed for years now to charge developers for their gravel use from the municipal pit.

If you prepare for the winter
You can always pay for a load of sand and bag it put away for the winter months when you will need it
