Jaypetee Audlakiak was sworn in as mayor of Sanirajak on Thursday, three days after winning a byelection in the hamlet of about 900 people.

Audlakiak received 47 votes, according to results posted on Facebook by Elections Nunavut. The second-place finisher, Joey Idlaut, got 25 votes while Ammie Kipsigak received 17 votes, Jason Kaernerk got 15 and David Curley received 13.

Voter turnout was below 30 per cent.

Audlakiak is expected to attend the hamlet office as mayor on Monday, said community economic development officer Roger Beaudry.

Audlakiak was not available for an interview Thursday.

When municipal elections were held territory-wide in October 2023, Philip Anguratsiaq was elected mayor of Sanirajak. The next round of municipal elections in Nunavut is set for October 2027.
