Students at the elementary and secondary schools in Pond Inlet have been allowed to return home after briefly locking down Thursday afternoon as local RCMP responded to an incident in the community.

In an email to Nunatsiaq News, Nunavut RCMP Insp. Winston Shorey said the lockdown was a precaution and the situation is resolved.

“It appears it was a neighbour dispute and as a precaution, due to the initial details provided to police, a shelter in place/lockdown was initiated until the circumstances were fully understood,” Shorey wrote.

Notices posted on social media just after 2 p.m. ET told parents not to pick up their children from either Ulaajuk or Nasivvik schools because a lockdown was in place.

Shorey said at the time that the Pond Inlet detachment was dealing with an “unknown” situation and would provide more information “as their operation permits.”

The Pond Inlet detachment did not request any outside resources to deal with the situation, Shorey said.
