15-year-old Rico Akpaleapik reported missing on Oct. 4

By Nunatsiaq News

The search for a teen who was reported missing in Pond Inlet more than three weeks ago has been suspended, the RCMP announced Tuesday.

Rico Akpaleapik, 15, was first reported missing on Oct. 4, prompting a widespread search.

But the RCMP, in consultation with Nunavut Emergency Management, called off the search on Oct. 13, police spokesperson Cpl. George Henrie said in a news release.

On Oct. 4, ground search and rescue teams, local volunteers, Canadian Rangers and other agencies were dispatched in the search, but they were unable to locate Akpaleapik.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and the Canadian Coast Guard also assisted in the search and supported searchers on the ground.

The RCMP deployed multiple officers who were aided in the search by drones and a police dog unit flown in from Québec.

The case is now being treated as a missing persons case, Henrie said.

The circumstances of Akpaleapik’s disappearance are unknown.

The RCMP will continue to investigate. Police ask anyone with information on Akpaleapik’s disappearance to contact the Pond Inlet RCMP.
