Ten people in Iqaluit were either charged with impaired driving or given 24-hour licence suspensions after a police roadside blitz in the city July 26 and July 27.

RCMP and municipal officers teamed up for the initiative, which was intended to keep the streets clear of impaired drivers, RCMP said Monday in a news release.

In all, officers stopped a total of 50 vehicles over the weekend.

Three people were charged with impaired driving in the blitz and seven others were issued 24-hour licence suspensions. Police did not name those who were charged or handed suspensions.

The City of Iqaluit announced in July that there would be heightened enforcement around impaired driving this summer.

20% of all drivers stopped, or every 1 in 5.

Critical question: were these random stops, or targeting erratic drivers?

If 20% of random drivers blew over 0.05 blood alcohol, that should be extremely alarming.

20% of erratic drivers makes sense.

In either case kudos for the increased enforcement.

Can’t do a 1 year suspension roadside. Read the traffic safety act.

24 hours is the punishment for a first offence between 0.05% and 0.08% blood alcohol.

Second offences and blowing over 0.08%, are much more seriously punished.

They need to do that here in Rankin Inlet.
The hamlet office cannot staff the By-Law Officer positions because it is out of control. Every year they post a letter in June what the by-laws are and that they will be enforced, that only lasts for about a week then it’s back to chaos on the roads.
