If you go shopping for wieners over the next little while, be careful what you buy.

As a precaution, Maple Leaf Foods has issued a recall notice for several brands of wieners produced at their plant in Hamilton, Ont.

Recent tests revealed the possible presence of the bug that causes listeria, a nasty disease whose symptoms include persistent fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness, nausea, and vomiting.

Last summer, 22 people across Canada died after contracting listeriosis, prompting the lengthy shut-down of a Maple Leaf Foods plant in Toronto.

The affected brands include Shopsy’s, Maple Leaf, Hygrade, and Maple Leaf Top Dog.

If you have wieners in your fridge or freezer, look for codes “L1” and “EST “611” near the best-before date on the package.

If you aren’t sure about the safety of any wieners you might have in your home, throw them out.

So far, no one is reported to have been infected with listeria as a result of these products.

In a statement, the company said earlier this week that they are issuing the recall as an “ultra-precautionary” measure.
