‘You are not alone’: GN lists supports available for National Addictions Awareness Week

Several help lines and online counselling services are available to Nunavummiut

It is National Addictions Awareness Week and the Department of Health has released a number of resources for those who might need support.

“You are not alone,” states a public service announcement released Monday by the department.

“If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, reach out to a trusted friend, family member, elder or wellness counsellor.”

For confidential support, individuals can contact the Healing by Talking Program, which offers virtual long-term counselling services to Inuit across Nunavut. Community health centres have information about this program, or people can email healing@gov.nu.ca or phone 867-975-5367 or toll-free at 1-888-648-0070.

The number for the GN’s employee and family assistance program is 1-800-663-1142.

Ilisaqsivik telephone counselling is offered in English and Inuktitut, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The toll-free number is 1-888-331-4433.

The Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Help Line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 867-979-3333 or toll free at 1-800-265-3333.

Crisis Services Canada is available by calling or texting 1-833-456-4566. An online chat is available at www.crisisservicescanada.ca.

Youthspace.ca offers online chats and email counselling through www.youthspace.ca. People can phone 1-833-456-4566  or text 778-783-0177.

The Kids Help Phone line is 1-800-668-6868. A live chat is also available at kidshelpphone.ca or people can text ‘CONNECT’ to 686868 to message with a trained volunteer.

National Addictions Awareness Week runs until Nov. 25.
