A young person has been charged in the death of a pedestrian in Iqaluit earlier this month.

The female youth faces a single charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, according to court documents obtained by Nunatsiaq News.

The accused is under the age of 18 and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The court documents identify the victim as Jemima Idlout.

What the RCMP described in a news release as a “fatal motor vehicle collision” in which “a pedestrian was struck and killed” occurred Aug. 10 at about 1:30 a.m. on Sivumugiaq Street, formerly Federal Road.

RCMP and the city’s emergency services responded, resulting in a closure of a section of the street between the Aqsarniit hotel and the RCMP detachment.

The Nunavut coroner’s office, which also was present at the scene, is investigating.

Nearly three weeks after the incident, yellow paint marks sprayed on the road by police officers during their investigation are still visible in the area of the collision.

According to the court documents, the accused has been released on conditions that include an overnight curfew and an order to not operate any motor vehicles.

The next court date is in October.
